Don’t Quit

I dropped by at National Bookstore and I bought a poster with the poem “Don’t Quit”. This poem is not an ordinary poem because it is very dear to me. This has been a part of all the struggles that my husband and I have been through. I am a product of an early marriage. I got married first before we are able to finish our studies both, because I am already pregnant that time. During the times when I am about to quit, my hubby Allan would often recite this poem to me. He told me that he had learned this poem during his Cadet Training in UP Diliman.

As a husband and wife, we had been through a lot of struggles in life brought about by our early marriage. Financial struggles, problems, unemployment and other trials that really tested our marriage. When I am always down and almost questioning God and about to quit, my husband will always recite this poem to me and my spirit will again be uplifted. He would tell me often that life is a continuous process and we must never quit. To others who may hear him recite this poem, he may look and sound corny. But for me this means a lot, a part of my being.

Oftentimes, when my daughter is also feeling school depression, I will ask her to read this poem. I would often tell her the story behind this “Don’t’ Quit” poem. I don’t know what is the direct effect of this poem to her, but I hope that somehow it will also ease her doubt and anxiety.

Right now, I am also face with problems at work…just when I am about to give up, I talked to my husband and he reminds me of this poem…never to quit and just hang on. It may be hard to face the problem especially when you feel you are alone, remember I am a wife of an OFW and most of my close friends are working abroad.

I like this poem ’cause if your feeling low it kind of makes you feel better…an inspirational poem indeed.

To others who are currently down and experiencing a problem like me, struggle but do not quit. To you, I would like to share this poem and hope that it will also help you ease the burden you have in your shoulders.

Don’t Quit

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don’t give up, though the pace seems slow -
You might succeed with another blow

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor’s cup.
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt -
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit -
It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.
