Considering To be An OFW: Consider This – Holiday Season

I would like to share to you how Brown Pinay’s Pamilyang OFW spent our New Years Eve. We have our Media Noche at 10PM, 2 hours ahead then the usual 12PM.
At exactly 12PM we are already upstairs chatting with my husband. At least we are able to celebrate our New Year together. (My Icko is now 5 years old and he only got to celebrate Xmas and New Year once with his papa he was still 2 months old then, I am looking forward to 2010 where in we can be together for good)

“Being an OFW or belonging to a Pamilyang OFW is a sacrifice for a good life, it is a choice, and it is not for the faint hearted.”

Another holiday season has gone by, for four years now we had been a Pamilyang OFW. It is not easy being a mom to a Pamilyang OFW, because I have to ensure that my kids have spent this season happily despite of our situation.

We may be distance apart but again thanks to the wonders of technology we are able to be together with my husband in Saudi although virtually only; it is already enough to make us happy for the time being.

We must also remember that if our OFW or our relatives abroad experience home-sickness their families left also experience a certain level of loneliness and deprivation.

For those who are considering being a Pamilyang OFW consider this:

- It is difficult to be away from your family. You will only realize it once you are there. When we are still considering being a Pamilyang OFW. My husband will tell me that everything will be alright; we can get through that loneliness and him with the homesickness. He told me to just think of the good life that it can bring us. But no matter what, no matter how many Christmas has passed us, we never cease to cry together and be lonely. There are many “if only” things that we would always recount. If only he is not deprived of good work here, if only we are better off here, if only the Philippines can provide employment then there will be no under employed or OFW working abroad afar from their loved ones.

- Expect that during Christmas season it is inevitable that we will experience loneliness and depression due to those Christmas blues. But we must always keep it in mind that being away from your loved ones is not enough reason to sulk and be depressed during the holiday. Perhaps if this occur, refrain from listening to sad music and from constant reminiscing because somehow it will only make you sad even more. Just keep your best to bring up a happy and a brave disposition in front of your kids and partner.

For me, I feel responsible for my kids and my hubby to make them feel loved and happy, they are counting on me. We may not know it but our loved-ones abroad are also undergoing depression and homesickness during this season. Showing them that you are lonely might aggravate this emptiness and make them miserable in this season even more.

To the OFW kids, always remember that your OFW parent left this country to give you the best future that they can provide. It is not too much to ask for you to do your part. Study hard and be a good kid. That is the only plea of every parent.

Also, I ask you to read the post of my OFW husband below to give you a better view on what they are experiencing abroad.
