Everyone was celebrating for the victory of Manny “Pacman” Pacquio over Cotto, that no one seems to notice the bitter sweet victory of another countryman of ours who has brought another pride in our country in the filed of Boxing.Filipino bantamweight winner Z Gorres was rushed to UMC Hospital in Las Vegas after winning a ten round decision over Luis Melendez at the House of Blues in the Mandalay Bay. After the final round Gorres was knocked down but survived to the bell. At the same time the referees’ decision favor him to win the fight. However, at the end of the fight, he began to feel faint and collapsed. He was taken out of the ring on a stretcher.
It was advised that Gorres suffered a subdural hematoma and had to undergo emergency surgery. Dr. Micheal Seiff had to remove a part of Gorres’ skull to relieve the swelling of the brain. According to news, Gorres was placed in a medically induced coma and is scheduled to have further tests over the weekend.
As of this writing, Gorres is showing signs of recovery.
Gorres plight is a dilemma and risk that every boxer has to undertake in exchange for the win, glory, fame and good life for their family. Even before there has been many unfortunate events like this that has transpired even before. I am just hopeful that the government will take note of this and protect our atheletes. It will be very beneficial if they will get a good insurance and not settle for any cheap health insurance
